South Indian food in Ireland: dosa, Kerala and Hyderabadi cooking
Where to find dosa, Kerala dishes and Hyderabadi biryani in Ireland, with a short guide to what to order.
Most Indian restaurants in Ireland serve North Indian style dishes like butter chicken, tikka masala and naan. South Indian cooking is different: rice and lentil batters, coconut, curry leaves and tamarind.
A few dishes worth knowing. Dosa is a thin, crisp pancake made from fermented rice and lentil batter, usually served with sambar (a lentil and vegetable stew) and coconut chutney. Idli are soft steamed rice cakes. Appam is a rice pancake from Kerala with soft centre and crisp edges. Hyderabadi biryani is rice and meat layered and cooked together in a sealed pot.
